Hi, Now that ivtv is merged upstream it can be supported at last on distributions where out-of-tree driver support is difficult¹. Unfortunately the merge is not complete since remote support depends on lirc, and lirc devs have decided long ago not to bother with merging.
I've long believed there could be no remote support in Linux without lirc, however I just noticed non-lirc remote drivers² are being pushed by the input people in mm, and will presumably end up in 2.6.23.
