The main thing about the cx25840 is that it's cheaper, includes the audio and video in one chip, and comes from Conexant too so get a package deal on the cx23416 and cx25840 together. So it's very likely this is true, the chip is probably exactly what you get for the cheaper price, just like the newer tuners they are using compared with the old ones (could even be the tuner difference your seeing? have you tried this with composite?). It's sad but expected for the price of these cards, although really think they'd keep the 250 cards available for those wanting a higher quality encoding still.


It might depend on the version of your PVR-250, though. I had an older PVR-250 with tuner type 2 that I recently broke and replaced with a PVR-500. I consider the PVR-500 to be higher quality.
