Ok I worked it out.

Because I had originally installed ATRpms ivtv 0.2.0 and followed
Jarod's guide, my modprobe.conf looked like this:

alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv

When compling the new driver from source, it installs tveeprom.ko & msp3400.ko.

So neither of these where being installed, A further look at my IVTV
log showed the following:
Jun 29 14:35:19 olympus kernel: ivtv: Failed to load module tveeprom
Jun 29 14:35:19 olympus kernel: ivtv: i2c client addr: 0x50 not found
for command 0!
Jun 29 14:35:19 olympus kernel: ivtv: Error -19 reading Hauppauge eeprom.
Jun 29 14:35:19 olympus kernel: ivtv: Possible causes: the tveeprom
module was not loaded, or
Jun 29 14:35:19 olympus kernel: ivtv: the eeprom kernel module was
loaded before the tveeprom module.

Suppose next time I should search further before making lots of noise :$

Next I guess I'll see if I can get the initrd stuff working with the
0.3.6 driver, hopefully should just work, I think I've learnt enough
to get around any problems, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Ant.
