My biggest problem while setting up lirc was version conflicts. Make
sure your module and utils are all the same version. I made the
mistake of accidently installing the rpm, then compiling lirc and
installing it leaving two binaries. Check your version number in your
 daemon and utilities.

i have installed the lirc, lirc-x, lirc-modules-source and
liblircclient0 packages from debian/unstable, and i built kernel modules
from lirc-modules-source for my 2.6.12.2-4-amd64 kernel. all have the
same version: 0.7.1pre2-2.

i guess that different versions are not an issue here.

any other suggestions?

I had problems since the weekend setting up a 150 and 350 in the same
box. one of the problems I had with my remote (which was working
happily in my 350 only configuration) was that the boards weren't
initializing cleanly. I ended up taking ALL the "option" lines out of
my ivtv file and doing a COLD reboot. When the system came back up,
the boards both were happy and the remote again worked. So, even
though I had all the right setup for my remote, not getting the dmesg
printout squeeky clean was the key. If the boards don't fully init,
the remote will probably not work either. This was using ivtv 3.6y.
When I used it with the 350 only I was running the ivtv 2.0 stable
release and it "just worked". The boards do keep some state through a
warm reboot so do a full shutdown and try it

One of the other issues I needed to fix was that I had the GREY
remote and not the SILVER one. Tough to tell when you only have the
one in front of you for comparison. There is documentation in the
HowTos on telling them apart from the part number in the battery
compartment
