And this prevents merging stuff in to the official kernel because...?  I 
really don't get it.  Just tell people to use whatever version of the kernel 
has support if they want their hardware supported.

This strange insistence on maintaining a separate set of identically named, 
incompatible modules just causes tons of problems for users.  Even just 
distributing a patch against the kernel for those modules would be better 
than the current situation.
