Darko - thanks for taking the time to reply and advising me on the links.
Actually, I have been able to solve the problem, but didn't know how to
edit my own mailing (never used one before).

Anyway - the solution was straightforward.  I had downloaded the FC6 disks a
few months ago, but couldn't get FC to install because of my radeon card
which kept crashing the install (loads of posts about it on the FC forums).
I now have a geforce card and thought I would try again - not realising
about the bug in anaconda that installs i586 instead of i686.  I found the
bug and followed instructions to upgrade 586 to 686 but it still left some
586 stuff on the HD and this screwed up the ivtv install.  All is ok now
(although I have another problem which I'll post about later if I can't fix
it.)

Jarret's guide is good, but it's a little out dated.
