Hi Catherine:
Well, I'm not sure how to solve your problem, but you must to know about
the citation styles for insert the references inside your text and about
the bibliography style that is the typographical layout you'll see at the
end of your document.
I don't know if you're using LaTeX, ConTeXt, TeX plain, LyX or perhaps
another tool for compose your documents and use bibTeX references. But the
must of times you should choose a bibliographic style: APA, Chicago, plain,
alpha, kluwer, nature, etc. And depending about which one you choose, the
citation and the style of the bibliography would change. If you can't find
the right style for your needs, the perhaps you should create it.
I don't know if this was helpful or is worse now after read this attempt of
answer.
Cheers:
Aradnix
