As a supplement to my previous entry:

The UART is a "Synopsys DesingWare APB UART".

The command "dmesg | grep ttyS" returns 
dw-apb-uart.0: ttyS0 at MMIO 0x9131E00 ... is a 16550A

In the configuration for the Linux Kernel the option 
"CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_DW" is set.
