We could keep the current unqualified pwmx_set_dutycycle(byte in duty) and  
let it
work unchanged, and add a procedure pwmx_set_dutycycle_lowres(byte in duty)  
which
sets low resolution mode but with higher precision than the unqualified  
procedure.
See the proposed change in my comment #3.

This will prevent compatibility issues and the new procedure provides a  
higher
precision duty cycle setting with an 8 bits argument.

The documentation of the different procedures must clearly (more than now)  
show what
the differences are. There should not be any misunderstanding about  
precision and
resolution.
