Most 5V devices will work with a 3V logic 1
Original TTL logic 1 is only 2.7V, so many original LS chips can
connect direct to 3.3V VDD logic in
Ports B, D, E, G and J are 5.5V tolerant and allow pullups to 5V
Ports A, C, F, H are VDD (i.e. 3.3) only  except for a few pins of C &
H

ICSP is the same, except voltages are different. hence you need a
PICkit2 , Pickit3 etc, not a JDM like I have for last 7 years.

I'd manually select 18xxJxx or 18xxKxx family before connecting to
make sure. These are separate menu item to 18F
