I'm not sure. Microchip has many differerent devices and atmel only
seems to have 'a few'. With the current arduino hype, it is pretty
easy to get all kind of boards with this chips for low prices. And
these boards can be used without the arduino gui and wire overhead.
And for atxmega: I have one of

Powerfull processor, extra 8MByte memory (only 64kbyte supported
transparantly by the toolchain I use, but that's still a lot) and sd
card socket...

They have many devices to choose from and add devices in a high pace.
I guess this is good since they have the right device for each
high-volumne project (that is: the device that is just large enough so
you don't pay for unused features). On the other hand, it prevents any
of them to become a standard...
