I am having this problem too and can not figure out what is going on. It may be some problem with the terminal emulation. If I telnet in from my linux box it works, but not from a windows telnet program. Also, depending on which program I use to telnet in, the password and name is echoed back with some programs and not others. I tried setting all the emulation to vt100, but it still doesn't work with some programs. Try using multiple telnet programs from multiple clients to see if you're having the same problem I was.
