Thanks for the input.  Yeah, I'm really sorry now I didn't save more of my
session log file.  The RFCs are great, and this <> is supposed to be
required, but like you said, there's so much variation in the
implementation.  The only thing keeping me from making it much more lax is
that the more flexibility you introduce, the more wholes you leave for
spammers to potentially exploit.
