Well, yes sometimes you want a little more control and the ability to
directly with and SMSC gateway. You might want to send binary SMS
messages(configfuration, logos, ringtones, etc.), set tariff class, etc.
But most sites with SMS services just use the approach you described, as
more advanced approaches usually require agreements with telecom operators.
