It seems that I can telnet into James only once,
and then again only after the server is stopped
and restarted. No error message in the log file
or anything, it justs sits there and doesn't connect.
In general, James seems to work, though (meaning I can
add a user and send mail to that user and retrieve it).

If you use file system storage of users - yes
If you use an RDBMS, no

That's bad - haven't heard of this bug before.
What exactly happens? Any useful log messages?

Charles
