I second using an actual textbook - an additional bonus is that if you start
classes at a college, they'll likely ask what you've studied from and you'll
be able to give a real answer. (I sort of stumbled around that question,
myself, since I didn't use a college book.) However, I also agree that
Genki sort of sucks. I don't have problems with the grammar explanations,
myself, but I don't like the way that the furigana is under the kanji and
the reading is separated (in the back half of the book). Also, I assume
you'd skip straight to Genki 2, and the dialogues continue from Genki 1.
It's not that bad, but it is a little frustrating. (I skipped to second
year and so never used Genki 1, just 2). It does have lots of exercises
that can be done individually, though, and if you can get ahold of the CDs
they have most all of the exercises so you can check if you're correct.

My friend used Nakama for his first two years, and I've heard good things
about Japanese for Busy People, but I'm not familiar with them personally,
so I don't know if they're appropriate for an intermediate level.
