Basic/Digest Authentication for Servlets

Is there a way to enable Basic/Digest Authentication
on servlets?  For example, how would I enable 
Basic authentication on the example/Hello servlet.

  -version of Apache JServ: Apache-JServ-1.0b3
  -version of Apache: apache_1.3.6
  -OS and OS version: Solaris 2
