Win95 / Apache1.3.6 / JServ1.0 / JDK1.2 / JSDK2.0 / GNUJSP0.9 - All
installed on a standalone testing PC.
If you don't have any time to waste, please disregard !
Hello from a Newbie,
This is my first day on this list and I think I'm going to have great fun
here reading those "hilarious" emails (STOP ! I don't want to offense
anybody here... :-O
_/ Yes, apache products take more time to install, more time to configure,
_/ you have to undersand more about what's happening on your machine, and
_/ there are fewer tools to help you.
>> Great !
I was wondering why JServ "doesn't serve" (In fact, I don't really know if
it "works" or not... because I guess that the status page that comes up
when I type http://127.0.0.1/jserv/ means that the install went right
but... ;-). Anyway my problem here is not about install (I'm leaving this
to David...)
My problem is that I cannot understand how to bloody simply serve servlets
or .jsp pages correctly... (Why does the staus handler works and not my
servlet :-?
After trying to modify - on my own - thowsands of these .conf or
.properties files - just thought I would be able to because they're "quite"
documented - I figured that as I'm not enough a programer, I can't spend
too much time on that (Don't misunderstand me, it's not an offense to
programers, I'm just saying I'm not ;-). So, I've tried in that order, the
log files (everything seem fine...), the manual (I usually never read
manuals until I encounter any problem that cannot be "intuitively" resolved
:-O ), the FAQ-O-Matic (Did find something but, unfortunately, it didn't
kelp me...), and finaly other articles I've gleaned around... I still don't
get it...
So what I do actually need is an
<easy-to-understand-step-by-step-instructions-in-order-to-succed-at-the-firs
t-time-list-for-a-non-programer-guy...> (Yes ! It's me and my new
<METAPHOR> tag :-).
1. Where do I put the files. If I put a file - let's call it "file.html" -
in the htdocs directory and type http://127.0.0.1/file.html, guess what
happens then : the content of the file appears in my browser... It looks
magic to me and that's the result I want with servlets... How do I make it
possible ?
2. What does Apache/Jserv need to reach and serve the files.
3. What is the easyest : I've seen several ways of doing the same thing but
none of them worked for me.
4. Everything else that I will probably never think about...
Of course, all of this should not exceed one page ! (Isn't that a challenge ?)
Or a servlet-installer... (Give it the servlet you want to serve and say
thank you ;-) and don't tell me : Just do it, Mike ! (I had a dream... ;-)
Don't hurry for the response, I'll be out for lunch, but back in time for
coffee next week !
Stay cool,
_
