i added something to the faq recently...  check that JAVA is not set to
JAVA_HOME (/usr/java) but rather JAVA_BIN (/usr/java/bin/java) in your
environment.  if it is, the Makefiles will be built improperly and it will
try to execute java commands with the /usr/java directory rather than the
/usr/java/bin/java executable.

that took me a week to figure out. (amongst everything else i'm working
on)
