Bingo! Got it! (and so, I'm replying to my own message, yes!)
It seems that, when using green threads, the port becomes locked by the
thread, and the wrapper presumes jserv to have died. Switching to native
threads therefore allows the java engine to respond even if
time-consuming connection is in progress. Simply sticking
"wrapper.env=THREADS_FLAG=native" into jserv.properties solved
everything! Yay!
(Of course, I have a jdk with native thread support -- ie not the old
blackdown green-threads-only jdk)
