I have chased this issue up with Sun and the issue will be resolved in the
Java release codenamed Merlin, due around Aug 2001. It is an issue with
the Java Foundation Classes which don't allow the use of graphics libs
without initalising an X session.
Just have to be patient for now....

Regards, Mark

How does this help me with server-side rendering on a server weher we DON'T
want to install or run X?

Yes, I know about PJA ... No, it doesn't work for us. In fact I don't know
of anyone it's worked for.

How about just a JPEG save/load?

Bill
