I don't have an answer for you other than it takes not only engineering
resources but QA resources to support each mix of platform/architecture/os.

Sun *doesn't* have the resources to make Java run on every freaking os and
device out there in the world. If you want Java for IBMs, you get it from
IBM. Sun doesn't do the port for the IBM mainframes, IBM does. There's more
than 100 entities that are licensees of the Java platform. They do a lot of
the "Run Anywhere" part of the equation.

Linux/x86 is a *large* market -- many times larger than any other Linux
market. Therefore, if you have to make a choice to make wrt a real budget
(read $$$), you support that one. Now, I agree that Sun could be doing more
to help the other platforms in the way that the code is made available, and
that's something that remains a topic of discussion. I also agree that the
way the PR was handled was horrible and I did spend quite a bit of time last
week (while in NYC) talking to various folks about this and how to possibly
fix it.
