There is no intrinsic difference, though the internals have
considerably changed.
Up to version 1.4, it was named J2EE, the newer versions are named
Java EE.
There is also a different versioning scheme, after 1.4, it is merely
5.
So you have:
J2EE 1.4 and the next version is Java EE 5.
