It may help us help you if you give us a URL at which we can
look at this JAR.
My first guess is that a transmission error or something made
a mess of the internal binary structure of the JAR file. You
probably used FTP to put the JAR file on the server; did you
specify MODE BINARY (or something like that) to your FTP
before uploading the file? Accidentally uploading it in text mode
might cause such an error.
The JAR is your preferred final form of delivering your applet.
But something else you might try testing is uploading all the
.class files to your server and temporarily removing the
ARCHIVE= field from the APPLET tag in your Web page.
This would let you test how your applet works in its natural form,
not crunched up by the JAR tool.
