Hello.  Check out this site:

It will give you a good idea about quaternions in general (ie the math
behind it and the meaning of the 4 elements).  Note: this site is not at
all related with Java, but it helped me a lot in understanding what I'm
doing and what I can do.  You will see in this site that every matrix (in
this case the rotational part of your transform) can be converted to a
quaternion and vice versa.  I hope this answers your question.
