The proposed timeline for X3D stands at(from Neil Trevett):

* Milestone 1 (10/25/01) -      Draft X3D Level 1 architecture and Level
1 profiles
                                          MPEG-4 Working Group begins
drafting submission to MPEG-4 committee
                                         Level 2 architecture and
profiles kickoff

* Milestone 2 (02/24/02) -     Final X3D Level 1 architecture and Level
1 profiles
                                        Draft X3D Level 2 architecture
and Level 2 profiles
                                        MPEG-4 Working Group final
submission to MPEG-4 committee

* Milestone 3 (SIGGRAPH 02) -   Final X3D specification (both levels)
ratified by Web 3D
                                                Submission to ISO for
International Standardization

What this means technically is this. The X3D level 1 stuff should be
ready for use by February. Any current VRML97 compliant browser should
be able to make this level of compliance in pretty short order. As to
advanced features specified in level 2, they should be speced but likely
they won't be widely implemented yet. You will tend to find a speced
feature implemented in at last one browser but not all.

As to specifics with the Xj3D project. By February we shoulld meet the
X3D level 1 spec. We are currently missing the JavaScript impl and a
few straggling node features.
