They seem to work pretty good except for textures. When I write a shape3d with a texture and then load it, the colors on the texture change. Then when I write and load again they change more. They continue to change, but in a pattern ... weird.
AFAIK, scenegraphio always compresses textures using jpeg with quite crappy quality by default.
Try setting j3d.io.ImageCompression system property to None or GZIP and check how it will work.
