If you want to make interesting looking buildings I'd go with a good 3D
modeling package. Besides making it easy to edit complex geometry, Max
makes it much easier to "paint" your buildings. Besides powerful
material compositing and texture mapping tools, you can also use its
advanced lighting and radiosity in conjunction with texture baking (Max
5) to make bitmap textures that give a more realistic look to your
visual simulations. And don't forget that it exposes virtually
everything in its SDK and scripting API - you can write your own
exporters to output data better matched to your Java 3D applications'
data structures.
