hi Mr.Couch, in response to your request on the Java3D mailing list here is my response:
[the type of project I'm working on using Java3D:] is a free spare time project about turn-based networked strategy games on general polyhedra with focus on scientific background (so we probably belong to the scientific visualization section). up to now we (ok, only me is one person) have over 900 downloads at sf, about 20.000 lines of code as a result of 2.5 years of evenings and weekends, and a pending release for around october. it seems we are the cutting-edge in this field what is quite astonishing... http://xistrat.org http://xistrat.sourceforge.net http://freshmeat.net/projects/xistrat you already linked from the J3D site to it when I asked, thanx very much [my standpoint towards the future of Java3D:] Well, currently I'm using it and it fits all my needs to 100%. as I look at it only as a tool and not my primary focus of my life, I intended to await future happenings to come. when it turns out to be a dead end then that's life, I don't regret my past hours spent and will look for alternatives like Xith3D (scenegraph based is ok for me) in the longer run. For the moment and near future the existing Java3D does its job. It's a good thing and I use it in my project. If someone was out there actively supporting it, we would continue to use it. I don't care too much so long as it is actively being developed. I'd like Java3D to be completely open sourced, but really I want someone to be a steward of the codebase to make sure that there is a central "reference" implementation to work with. I am quite completely out of the internal matters but probably basing Java3D on top of JOGL would be a GoodThing (TM)?! Well, that's all I can guess. and thanx for your support of J3D, keep on going please. bye, regards Kai Brommann __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
