The other big advantage of Java3D is that it is a big well documented and coherent 
reference implementation. That meant that it was relatively easy to learn because a) 
everyone was using the same API and b) there were books about it. I would never have 
been able to do most of the j3D stuff I have done without Daniel Selman's book and 
"Java3D jump-start". It provided a really good path to learn about 3D programming. My 
concern is that if the API gets too fragmented it will be much harder for people to 
get started with it and there will be much less of a pathway into 3d programming with 
java. I'm not sure if there is anything we can do about this, though.
