Also see the Jikes RVM (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jikesrvm/).

I'm curious as to whether there are really great advantages to the 
technical ground covered by Jikes RVM vs. Maxine.  While competition and 
diversity is great, I wonder if they couldn't produce something useful 
for production rather than just research applications if the parties 
worked on 1 metacircular JVM rather than 2.
