Dear Kevin, Thanks for your reply .I beg to differ on this.
Nobel prize isn't a com, odity that any one gets.it is the quality & not the quantity of people that matters. Furthermore, what has number of people got to do with this..Your parameters are wrong.. Anyways,2000 or 300000 ,what matters is the work. The quality..A yearly prize given for excellence in fields.. I am surprised by your metrics.. For e.g. Australia/West Indies has won 2 cricket world cups & india 1..is that population size to measure which team is better.?? I know my facts but you may not know the metrics assignment.. You can never assign such distinguished prizes on sizes or anything as such..the kind of work, thinking ,etc matters.. Let us focus on the thread topic here my friend ..:) Thanks, jd On 8/19/10, Kevin Wright <kev.lee.wri...@gmail.com> wrote: > Based on this: > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_laureates_by_country > > <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_laureates_by_country>I can see > that the UK has 117 laureates, and the US has 320 laureates > Giving the US roughly 2.7 times as many laureates as the UK > > Furthermore, from here: > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population > > I can see that the size of the UK population is 62,041,708 and for the US > is 310,020,000 > Giving the US a population roughly 5 times as large as the UK > > > Or calculated as laureates per capita > UK: 117/62041708 = 1.89*10^-6 > US: 320/310020000 = 1.03*10^-6 > > > So there's a higher percentage of Nobel laureates from the UK than from the > US. > Please check you facts before posting such claims, and cite your sources if > possible. > I haven't yet done the laureates per-capita for other countries, but I'm > sure the results would be fascinating > > > > On 18 August 2010 22:55, jitesh dundas <jbdun...@gmail.com> wrote: > >> B) IS CORRECT..THANKS.. >> >> >> On Thu, Aug 19, 2010 at 3:07 AM, Kevin Wright >> <kev.lee.wri...@gmail.com>wrote: >> >>> Do you mean: a) Of all Nobel laureates, the most commonly occurring >>> nationality is USA >>> Or that: b) the proportion of USA citizens holding a Nobel laureate is >>> higher than the proportion of nationals of any other country >>> >>> >>> Because a) is a useless statement, it hasn't normalised against the >>> relative population sizes of countries participating in the Nobel prize >>> awards... >>> >>> >>> >>> >>> On 18 August 2010 21:11, jitesh dundas <jbdun...@gmail.com> wrote: >>> >>>> 1)Ya i KNow..Those were two separate statements.Sorry I was not clear in >>>> my writing.. >>>> >>>> 2) Do you know that maximum % of the nobel laureates are from USA? >>>> >>>> Hope that clarifies the reply..Thanks for your reply..I didnt know about >>>> his research part though.Thanks.. >>>> >>>> Regards, >>>> JD >>>> >>>> >>>> On Thu, Aug 19, 2010 at 1:15 AM, Russel Winder >>>> <rus...@russel.org.uk>wrote: >>>> >>>>> On Thu, 2010-08-19 at 01:11 +0530, jitesh dundas wrote: >>>>> [ . . . ] >>>>> > USA has produced some really good scientists in the past ..Tim >>>>> > Berners >>>>> > Lee is like God to me.. >>>>> >>>>> He is from the UK. >>>>> >>>>> Research done that made him famous done in Switzerland. >>>>> >>>>> -- >>>>> Russel. >>>>> >>>>> ============================================================================= >>>>> Dr Russel Winder t: +44 20 7585 2200 voip: >>>>> sip:russel.win...@ekiga.net <sip%3arussel.win...@ekiga.net> >>>>> 41 Buckmaster Road m: +44 7770 465 077 xmpp: rus...@russel.org.uk >>>>> London SW11 1EN, UK w: www.russel.org.uk skype: russel_winder >>>>> >>>> >>>> -- >>>> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google >>>> Groups >>>> "The Java Posse" group. >>>> To post to this group, send email to javapo...@googlegroups.com. >>>> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to >>>> javaposse+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com<javaposse%2bunsubscr...@googlegroups.com> >>>> . >>>> For more options, visit this group at >>>> http://groups.google.com/group/javaposse?hl=en. >>>> >>> >>> >>> >>> -- >>> Kevin Wright >>> >>> mail/google talk: kev.lee.wri...@gmail.com >>> wave: kev.lee.wri...@googlewave.com >>> skype: kev.lee.wright >>> twitter: @thecoda >>> >>> -- >>> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups >>> "The Java Posse" group. >>> To post to this group, send email to javapo...@googlegroups.com. >>> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to >>> javaposse+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com<javaposse%2bunsubscr...@googlegroups.com> >>> . >>> For more options, visit this group at >>> http://groups.google.com/group/javaposse?hl=en. >>> >> >> -- >> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups >> "The Java Posse" group. >> To post to this group, send email to javapo...@googlegroups.com. >> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to >> javaposse+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com<javaposse%2bunsubscr...@googlegroups.com> >> . >> For more options, visit this group at >> http://groups.google.com/group/javaposse?hl=en. >> > > > > -- > Kevin Wright > > mail/google talk: kev.lee.wri...@gmail.com > wave: kev.lee.wri...@googlewave.com > skype: kev.lee.wright > twitter: @thecoda > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "The Java Posse" group. > To post to this group, send email to javapo...@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > javaposse+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/javaposse?hl=en. > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
