“Failure post rationalization” is the perfect explanation for what you
describe. You can add another point, which is the fans' perspective.
They are really not interested in Apple's revenues (I mean, the love
Apple but as far as the company is sound and healthy more or less
profits don't make a difference). But they feel really good because they
own Apple gear. If you gave them the opportunity of perceiving
themselves as an elite, they feel even better.
Honestly, for the Windows vs Mac OS / Mac OS X thing, they have actually
enjoyed the better product for most years (it wasn't probably so during
the final years of the old Mac OS), while being a minority. I doubt
they're going to enjoy the better product with the iStuff, but this
