If you've not experienced the industry, some banks have programming
languages that they developed in-house.  Perhaps based on something like
Java, but retrofitted with custom features like embedded database support.
 This can be tricky when it comes to getting support, or using other
resources available online.  I also suspect it's also done to make you less
employable elsewhere...

Perhaps this is the strongest example available of dis-empowering
developers.  I wonder why language is often treated as a far more
"political" decision than choices over IDEs, build tools or libraries.
