Which is all very well, but Apple seems to be embracing the flip side of
consumer devices as well.

Think how much it costs to buy a replacement element for your oven if the
old one fails, or the DRM restrictions you have to deal with for watching a
movie nowadays.  This is also part of what it means to be a modern
"consumer" device.
