Well it was just an idea. Not all Ideas I have are good. I don't recall suggesting that that a system based purely on GPUs would be useful, just that GPUs could transparently assist in operations which were suited to using them. I have heard of some Anti- Virus software utilising the GPU because it can perform some Anti- Virus related activity more efficiently than the CPU though I don't know any more detail than that.
I would expect the downfall of Jazelle is the downfall of JavaME. If JavaME is slumping rapidly in popularity and Jazelle is not free, phone companies must pay a licensing fee to use the technology. If JavaME is no longer felt to be of value enough to pay for the licensing fee then Jazelle fades away like JavaME. It might be different if ARM did not require a licensing fee to use it. It is rightly pointed out that there are processors that can accelerate Java byte code but this doesn't help .Net. I wholly agree. That is why I wish there were some truly open and neutral bytecode standard that the different technologies could converge on. In reality I don't see that happening. It seems much more clear recently that the perception of Java as an open technology is not as true as I used to believe. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
