I've seen some very simple improvised set-ups at work, where people simply have
a sturdy enough and tall enough support that they can put in or take out of
from underneath their monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Wanna stand? -- slip it
in. Get tired? -- take it out and pull up a chair. People use milk crates
with a tabletop, stacks of books, etc. Seems to work for them and no need to
hassle facilities to procure a special desk. Also, I've been seeing some
stand-up desks set up in some common areas. People occasionally use them for
impromptu quick meetings. I took to liking those, just like you describe it,
but I have yet to try standing for prolonged periods. Seems having this kind
of flexibility is key to a good experience and sticking with it. Alexey

After reading this thread, I stood up to write for a while, and it felt very
good. I might have to reconfigure my home setup to allow me to switch easily
between standing and sitting.

I have a ball at home and mostly stand up at work. From traveling around
various places there seems to be a big difference on what employers grant their
desk soldiers. In Denmark where I currently reside, it's rare to come into an
office without a standing desk, whereas in Canada it seems quite rare. A
standing desk is superior in my opinion, although probably more so in
collaborative/communicative situations and less so when in the "hardcore coding
zone".
