I mostly with photos. Tried Picasa, Photoshop Elements and currently using
Lightroom. I realised that the way to go is avoid managing photos in
folders and instead tag them in some application.
Since all my photos are in RAW format, I had trouble with Picasa. Also,
support for RAW is limited and it has trouble with other color profiles
than sRGB.
I found Photoshop Elements much better than Picasa, mostly on the editing
part - Camera Raw and limited photoshop tools are much better than what
Picasa offers. However, I missed support for uploading albums directly to
PicasaWeb. Photo organizer was a tad better, and photo export was a bit
better as well.
I then moved to Lightroom, mainly because I found Elements photoshop tools
too limiting and wanted DNG support. The lightroom organizer is pretty much
identical to the one in Elements although it looks a bit different.
However, editing tools are way better. There's also batch processing and a
more advanced Camera Raw version. Conversion to DNG on import is supported
in Lightroom. What I find a bit annoying is that Lightroom does not have a
"erase sd card after import" feature.
Backups are supported in both Elements and Lightroom, but I just backup the
photo folder and the Lightroom catalog files.
I also buy upgrade every second release so it ends up being quite cheap.

TL;DR; Picasa is primitive but does the job of organization, Elements just
right if all you need is import and organize photo library, Lightroom is
great if you want Elements with some more serious editing, but not
Photoshop serious. Elements and Lightroom also support videos, but I have
little experience with that.
Oh and yeah, they are not supported on Linux...which sucks donkey balls.
