Hi Wayne.
I use Office 2016 constantly. I can make several suggestions as regards the
Spell check function.

1. The Alt combinations no longer function. Depending on the current
status, the single letter will often perform the function desired. However,
Word 2016 provides additional support which can be difficult to operate
until you understand it.

2. In the Default setting, Word 2016 checks both the spelling and the
context. If the system finds a phrase which doesn't match the pre-approved
parameters, it will stop and provide an explanation. It's that explanation
which causes the system to act differently. In a sense, it will not only
suggest a different sentence structure but will explain why this change is
necessary. To get out of that dialog, just press the Escape key.

3. The safest and easiest way to navigate Word 2016's Grammar and Spelling
checks is by tabbing. Here's an example.
If a word is found which appears to be misspelled, Word 2016 will give you a
list of possible alternatives. To select the one you want, just move down
the list and press Enter to confirm the choice. In some cases, it may still
be necessary to move to the "Change" button and press enter there as well.

4. it is possible to remove the Grammar check and simply have the system
check for spelling errors, but it isn't easy. In fact, I haven't found the
correct ribbon which contains that option.

5. Word 2016, like its predecessors, will alert you of differences in
spacing. That too comes up as an announcement. All you have to do is
locate and engage the Change button.

6. This thing is punctuation conscious. Again, the explanation message
shows up and it tells you why the punctuation should be changed. I don't
always agree with the justification so I will Escape out of the message,
move to Ignore and press enter to confirm my choice.

I hope that this helps you a bit. The dictionary in Word 2016 is much more
massive than anything Microsoft has created before. It is more than five
times the size of the file in Word 2007.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] MS Word 2016 and Spell-check

Hello to all-

I do a lot of writing and spell-check is essential for my work. I am
currently using MS Office 2007 on 1 machine and 2010 on another. I went to
a demonstration of MS Word 2016 and Spell-check was a disaster. You have to
search for the wrong spellings amid pop-ups and all sorts of unreadable
tabs. Has anyone been using Spell-check effectively in Word 2016? If so,
can you point me to where I can learn how to navigate it. The older
versions were so simple and straightforward.

Wayne
