Yes, Flor, I went through the task manager and stopped all Google and Chrome 
programs running.
The solution, as you guessed, turns out to have been one of my applications, 
LogMeIn. Why this should be so is beyond me. I finally called on my tech 
consultant who figured it out after half an hour of expert messing around. 
Google Chrome is now ready to go.

Adrian,
Have you checked in Task Manager, to see if there are any Chrome.exe or Chrome 
anything running? and then End Process?

It's also possible that the problem has nothing at all to do with Google 
Chrome, which is just a manifestation of it. Have you had difficulty 
uninstalling any other programs? (I'm thinking of this Windows XP error message 
you got.)

Update. Although I have Windows 7, Chrome is saying:

This computer will no longer receive Chrome updates because Windows XP and 
Windows Vista are no longer supported

Apparently, not only won't it receive updates; it won't even install. So, now 
the question is how to persuade Google that my system is Windows 7? I'm getting 
nowhere with this query on Google.

As always, a thoughtful post. I uninstalled the current version of Revo and 
downloaded 1.9 from your Dropbox link. As you say, with first-letter 
navigation, the programs list is navigable. Unfortunately, Revo doesn't find 
either Chrome or Google. I thought of tricking it by reinstalling Chrome, but 
that's the point right now: I can't!
Now that I've followed your instructions, I'll feel comfortable using Revo in 
the future. But now, I have to ask the list again: Any ideas? Meanwhile, back 
to Google search. At least I can't uninstall it.

Below is a Dropbox link for the  last accessible version of Revo, & some steps 
are below that.  Read the steps first, & if you run into problems you can call

It probably isn't the most intuitive program ever made, but in a normal 
situation it's like a wizzard process.

1.  find the program you want to uninstall in a list of programs that first 
comes up when you start the program.  You need to use first letter navigation 
to do this or, use your arrow keys because I haven't found a way to put all the 
programs into list view.

2.  With the program highlighted that you want to remove, open the context menu 
and press enter on uninstall.  You will get a dialogue asking if you're sure 
you want to remove this program, tab to the yes option & press the spacebar.

3.  Now it's time to choose the level at which revo uninstaller does its job.  
So, Shift + tab, into the options list.  you have 4 modes Built-in, Safe, 
Moderate, & Advanced.  I always choose advanced because some programs love to 
leave registry entries and little traces of themselves everywhere.
These are radio buttons, so just choose the appropriate one.

4.  Hit the next button and Revo will go to work and uninstall your program, so 
sit back for a minute or two.

5.  This is when the fun really starts.  After you hit the next button, Revo 
will display a number of left over files and registry entries from
the program.    hit the tab key and  you should find a select all
button, and a delete button. so first hit select all, followed by delete. 
You'll get a warning asking if you really want to do this?
Answer yes.  It'll then delete any files left over.  Now depending on how the 
program is, it may next ask you to delete registry entries, this is the same as 
left over files. Don't worry, this is safe to do because it only deletes the 
registry entries that are for the application you're uninstalling, it won't 
delete anything else but that.  So do the select all and delete thing again and 
answer yes.  Sometimes, you might even see a screen that just has a tree view, 
but it has nothing displayed. In that case just do what you would normally do 
and hit select all and delete and that'll do it.  After all that is done revo 
will display a dialogue  with a finish button.
Hit that, and you're done.  you can then delete another program or close the 
program it's up to you.  Sometimes you need to use the, Insert + F10, keystroke 
to open the Jaws task list & find the Revo remove option & press enter because 
you'll have landed on a blank window so you need to bring Revo back into focus.

Okay, now I've installed version 2.03 of Revo. It looks completely 
inaccessible. Using the PC cursor, the window says nothing but for a graphic 
window. The JAWS cursor reads a lot more, but I don't seem able to activate any 
controls. For example, I pressed insert-PC cursor on "Hunter," but the result, 
whether with the PC or JAWS cursor, was just a graphic.

Thanks, Flor. Yes, I checked add'/remove. I then went to task manager and 
stopped all Chrome and google-related running programs from running. Now I 
don't get the ongoing download message. Instead, after I authorize the system 
to run the Chrome  installation file, nothing happens, except that the Google 
programs show up again in the task manager.
Justin, although others on this list recommend Revo Uninstaller, I'm nervous 
about running a program that might do more than I want. If you or anyone else 
can give me some reassurance, I'd be happy to try it.

It sounds like some remainder of Google Chrome or Google Toolbar is till on 
your computer? Have you search your Control Panel Add / Remove?

The current thread about browsers has renewed my interest in using Chrome as 
more than an occasional backup. However, my copy of Chrome had problems that I 
couldn't fix. For example, it always opened with the "open file" dialog. I 
couldn't get Settings to give me any options, such as setting my homepage.
So I uninstalled it with the intention of reinstalling. Now here's my problem. 
I keep getting the following message:

Installation failed. Another installation of a Google application is in 
progress.

After first getting this message, I ran CCleaner and then rebooted. I tried 
again to install Chrome, only to get the same message.

Note: I did not run CCleaner's registry option and don't want to mess in any 
way with the registry.

Any ideas?
