Hi Steve,
It makes sense, but when you think that the antivirus program should
pick something up by scanning the zip and finding an executable that
could be melicious and it says nothing is concerning to me. Also, the
eicar virus checker I originally posted which topped off my question
from that article, it should've picked it up on saving, and that tells
you that the virus checker is working as designed.

Jared,
Just because it doesn't pick up anything doesn't necessarily mean it is
a problem.
I can assure you, you can find other anti-virus programs that will pick
up lots of things -- the problem is, they pick up a lot of "false
positives," meaning that you're needlessly flagging things as problems
that aren't. Recall a few years ago, when one of the major commercial
AV programs, I can't remember which one, was disabling one of the other
screen-readers because it flagged one of its components as pernicious.
So, I maintain, as do others, that Windows Defender, or MSSE, is fine
along with running periodic scans with an off-line program. Personally,
I use Sophos Virus Removal tool.

Hello Steve,
I want to get away from MSE because it doesn't seem to pick up
anything, even if I don't download anything. Once it picked up a file
as temp files and said it was something, but most of the time it says
nothing. I'm on windows 7 64 bit, and was looking for something else.
I've used Trend Micro's house call tool which does scanning and
updating of its engine through the download, but it seems to be only
doing one drive. MSE does my whole machine, but I was curious if there
was something else out there besides MSE that would be more reliable.
I haven't made any changes yet, someone said I aught to install it and
see, but now i'm not sure. Its sad that nobody is accessible anymore,
I do practice good web habits, have read up and listen to security
podcasts, and I am careful, but with the threats today, something is
always needed and was looking for something that would be a bit better
than my experience lately with MSE. Thanks for your thoughts.

Sophos isn't real accessible; you're best bet is to use Windows
Defender a.k.a. Microsoft Security Essentials in earlier versions of
Windows before Windows 10. Then, as a backup, use an off-line
scanner to periodically run a double-check on your system along with
practicing good web habits i.e. avoiding peer-to-peer sites, the dark
web, and opening unknown email attachments or links.
I use the Sophos Virus Removal tool, which is pretty accessible. You
may need to use the Jaws Convenient OCR to update the scanning engine
if you haven't used it in the past month, and you might have to also
use that to initiate a scan. But, at least the results are viewable
and since it isn't always running, you don't need to try to configure
it to play nice with certain sites or programs. That's why I prefer
Windows Defender.

I asked about this earlier and received no response. I couldn't read
anything on the home screen with Window-Eyes. With JAWS, all I can
read is a number of graphics labeled with numbers. Labeling these
would either require sighted assistance or a lot of trial and error.
I too would like serious help reading Sophos with JAWS. By the way,
NVDA did a little better, but it was not perfect.

OK,
I'm consoled with a couple of people, and Sophos is the vote
recommended
to me. Is there anything i need to keep in mind on using this with
Jaws?

I used to use the paid version a while ago , its simple and
accessible.
That's at least 10 years or so ago.
But their free one should be alright as I believe its cloud driven.
But I highly recommend sophos.

they also have a free version. The business and enterprise
protection from
them are just state of the art. I set them up in company network
like the
UTM, endpoint. I just only found out that they have the free
version for
home, so you should try them.

I think I've heard of the software, but not too familiar with it. Do
you have a link?

Hello,
I am using Panda, the free version of Panda.
In some cases to improve the accessibility, I use the OCR option
of JAWS
and then I can read the screen, and while I am using the OCR, I
can use
the tab to go from option to option.
I wish you success.

So, I saw a post on twitter, and it is talking about antivirus.
Part of
the page says:
The easiest way to ensure that your antivirus software is working
is to
use the EICAR test file.
The EICAR test file is a virus simulator developed by the European
Institute for Computer Antivirus Research and
Computer Antivirus Research Organization.
To create an EICAR test file, copy and paste the following line
into a
blank file using a text editor such as Notepad:"
The URL to the full post is at:
https://webtecsrilanka.com/2017/02/18/how-to-tell-if-your-antivirus-is-worki
ng/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
for your review. When i went to send the original message
intending to
keep things in tact, the outbound picked it up as harmful which
means it
worked, but MSE never picked it up nor what I've written below. A
bit
concerning.
I did this, and found that microsoft security essentials leaves it.
I got concerned when I knowingly saved a file as I wanted to see
if it
would pick up the file. I left it for awhile and saved it on one
of my
drives. I submitted it using I believe it was av test or a site
that I
found that allowed me to see what antivirus picked this particular
file
I had up. MSE never picked it up. Now that I'm a Jaws user, what
antivirus besides MSE would work with Jaws?
I've got Windows 7, 64 bit. I don't think MSE is doing the trick
anymore if a file can go undetected for that long, and it never got
flagged for review. It was a zip, with an executable in it, which i
knew was dangerous, but I save them at times to see if the thing is
working and picks them up.
