Hi Adrian, It is often a challenge for professional localizers too, as almost the only company who translated keyboard shortcuts in Spanish is Microsoft, and currently they're not taking care of this aspect as before, since many Spanish help topics display English mnemonics while actual UIs have translated ones, which is obviously a mess.
Regarding JAWS, to tell you only one very relevant case, remember when in JAWS 12.0 Freedom Scientific replaced Configuration Manager with Settings Center. You'll remember that it was (and is) possible to press a keystroke to quickly jump to the Search Box of this JAWS utility. The problem, however, is that while CTRL+E is known and consistent in English for search boxes, not only was unfamiliar for Spanish users, but also this original English keystroke of a script inserted in Default.jss had a conflict with the SelectAll script, which in Spanish is assigned to CTRL+E. This is not because most Spanish versions of web browsers, Adobe or other major companies products have translated keyboard shortcut of Select All command from CTRL+A to CTRL+E, but because Windows Explorer and many built-in apps such as Notepad have so. As a result of the conflicts, until JAWS 17 or 18 in which FS fixed this, Spanish users could not normally use the keystroke to select all without PassKeyThrough or using Keyboard Manager to either delete assignment of SelectAll, or changing ActivateSearchBox script from CTRL+E to CTRL+B, which is the keystroke to focus Windows Explorer's search box in Spanish Windows versions. Many translators think that Microsoft should start to use English keyboard shortcuts even on localized products as other companies an even Microsoft in most languages do, in the same way they're doing with completely new products; however, Office programs use the same shortcuts since more than 20 years ago, which makes this idea too hard to implement. They tried to revert keystroke for the Outlook search box to CTRL+E as in English in a relatively recent update, but soon they went back to CTRL+B: users wasn't notified of the change, but also they introduced an additional issue because not changing also CTRL+E to CTRL+A to select all it was not possible to quickly use the Select All command, as in Spanish CTRL+A is assigned to Open. Nice weekend and sorry for this long speech! -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Saturday, July 15, 2017 5:17 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Searching in Outlook Hi, Fernando. I'm learning a great deal from your posts, at the practical level and in other ways. I'd never thought about the use of different commands resulting from another language's different words and first-letter mnemonics. I'd find it a challenge to operate Word in two languages as you do, and no doubt others on this list do. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Saturday, July 15, 2017 3:53 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Searching in Outlook Hi Adrian, Thank you for reminding me about the Advanced Search dialog opened by CTRL+SHIFT+F, which I didn't remember because that hotkey in Spanish Outlook, unlike keyboard shortcuts in other Office programs and even Outlook editing areas, is not localized: CTRL+B set focus into the search box like in File Explorer instead of CTRL+E which in Spanish is used to select all, but CTRL+SHIFT+B, which would be the expected shortcut, opens the Adress Book. Unfortunately, unlike in other Office programs, Outlook keyboard shortcuts can't be customized. Specifically about searching in Outlook, when there are few criteria it seems simpler to use the Search Box, but I'll keep in mind this dialog box when I need to specify multiple filters and search strings with buildcards. T Thanks again! -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Saturday, July 15, 2017 1:13 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Searching in Outlook Fernando and Wayne, Excellent instruction, as always, Fernando. I have an alternative that may just be simpler for Wayne's purposes. Wayne, you're trying to search either by subject or sender. Here's what I do. I'm using Outlook 2010, but I think it will work in 2007 as well. As Fernando says, your best bet is to identify the folder where the messages you want are likely stored. So, your first step is to place focus at a message in that folder's message list. Do not open that message. The second step is to press control-shift-f. Now, for a subject search, with your having pressed control-shift-f, focus will be placed in the edit field for subject. Type your search term and press enter. Wait for JAWS to verbalize "Find now." Press F6 to land in the list of results. For a "From" search, after pressing control-shift-f, tab three times to the "From" edit field. Enter your search criteria, press enter, wait for "find now," and press F6 for the results list, I find In addition to these two search functions, I also use the "To" edit field, which I get to with five presses of the tab key after pressing control-shift-f. You can restrict your search results further by entering search criteria into more than one field at one time, such as in the subject and "from" fields. One last point. When I'm not sure the subject line will cover my subject search, I look for search strings within message fields as follows: Control-shift-f Tab once Down-arrow once Shift-tab once Enter the search string in this edit field and press enter, etc. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Friday, July 14, 2017 8:33 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Searching in Outlook Hi Wayne, Searching for lonely words is not a good idea when you're searching on all folders/mailboxes or in a folder where you have many messages. To use search accurately, after you tab to the Search Box or press CTRL+E to quickly focus it, use the Search tab on the ribbon (that tab is context-sensitive, which means it only appears when doing a specific task, in this case searching; you'll recognize the tab because JAWS also reads the group box surrounding it) to refine search by specifying information like sender, subject, dates, wetter or not the messages to search have attachments and more, as well as if you want to search only in the current folder, all folders, all mailboxes or all Outlook items. This last scope option includes both e-mail messages and other Outlook items like task, notes, contacts, calendar appointments, meeting requests and other thinks I don't remember. Also, be aware that options for refining the search change depending on the view (Mail, Calendar, Contacts and so on) you are using. As a suggestion purely subjective, I would recommend you to open search options and deactivate automatic displaying when typing and limiting of shown results. With the first change, it'll be easier to enter all the criteria you want in slow computers, starting the search when pressing ENTER instead; with the second, you'll be able to navigate through the results, when there are too many, as in any mail folder. Hope it helps! -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of wayne smith Sent: Friday, July 14, 2017 8:19 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Searching in Outlook Hello all- I am using Outlook 2007 and all of my emails are sent there and it is great for quickly doing many functions. One problem is when I want to do a search for emails from a particular source or about a particular topic. I tab to the search field and type in what I am looking for. Once in a while a list will magically appear and I can simply arrow down through that list and select one if I want it. Most of the time, however, nothing comes up or I tab to where it tells me: A large number of messages have been found click this button if you want all of them or limit your results. If I do that nothing that I can find comes up. Any help in doing searches would be appreciated.
