David, thanks again. I did solve the problem completely last night by removing page numbers and starting over, which took very little time. Removing page numbers in Word 2010, for anyone interested, involves pressing alt-n for insert, then tabbing like crazy. There may be a shortcut, but I didn't take note of it.

That is, the bottom middle is blank on the first page, while numbering begins at 2 at middle bottom on the second. Here's the problem. the first page has number 1 in the bottom right corner. I haven't yet figured out how to stop that happening. I thought changing the location would reverse my previous location, but not so, although only for that first page. This is for two reasons: exact file location varies on Windows XP compared to newer versions and, the most important, unlike standard documents, template files by default create a new document based on them when you open with ENTER, so you need to open the context menu to choose the Edit option instead, like when you are on a standard document you must choose New if you don't want to edit the current file. To directly edit the Normal.dotm template regardless of your operating system, do the following:1 . Open Word and, when opened, close the blank document with CTRL+W. Even when you'll not directly edit a blank document, blank documents are based in Normal.dotm and this file might be in use by a blank document when you try to save it. 2. Press CTRL+O for the Open dialog. 3. Tab to the File Type combo box and select the option for All Word Templates or something similar. 4. Tab to the Address Bar (or Look In combo box if you have Windows XP) and see if you're in the Templates folder. If not, drop down the Look In combo box and choose Templates. If you have Windows Vista or newer and you're not in the Templates folder, tab to the folder tree view and, at the top (press HOME to quickly go there) find Templates and press ENTER to go to that folder. 5. Tab to the list of files and find Normal.dotm and then press ENTER. 6. Make the changes you want and save (not save as) with CTRL+S as any normal file. You won't get any prompt or confirmation, but you might hear a sound if you have the Office Sounds add-in installed and enabled. To read page numbers in a Word file, I press alt-v, then h, then arrow down. Does anyone have an alternative method because I don't find this one reliable. I'm using Word 2010.
