Good question. I don't know the answer. But based on today's comments, I'd go
for this Pearl deal if I didn't already have the Hovercam.

Is the Hovercam compatible with JAWS 2018 OCR?

At work, I use ABBYY FineReader Pro 12 for OCR, which is remarkably effective
for processing scanned images downloaded as PDF files from journal publishers.
Headings and footnotes, for example, are all recognized and converted to
appropriate word processor styles. I haven't decided what to buy for use at
home yet, other than that it should be at least equivalent to what's available
in my work environment.

Nothing very helpful, Wayne. Personally, I much prefer working with JAWS than
the iPhone, so the Pearl has an automatic advantage there. My concern is
comparing the Pearl with another device I already have, the Hovercam, which
doesn't seem to be widely used by people on this list.

Adrian, I have an Apple phone with the KNFB reader installed. It looks like the
Pearl will only work withFS devices and software and that makes it a bit less
useful. Any thoughts?

Wayne

Dave,
Extremely helpful. I have a similar device called the Hovercam that seems to
function in a similar way (it snaps the photo or series of photos very fast
before processing) and also folds into a relatively small unit, though a bit
larger than the dimensions you give for the Pearl. Tempted as I am by the
offer, it sounds as if it would be redundant.

Adrian,
The Pearl needs a USB connection to a computer, and it requires either using
JAWS 2018 in Convenient OCR mode, or Openbook. It is portable, as it folds down
into a roughly 3x3x20 inch case. Mine sits on my desk ready to use.

Very quick compared to a standard flatbed scanner, since it snaps a picture
rather than scanning across the document.

Don't have a Kurzweil, so cannot compare. Call me on the phone if you want to
talk more about it.

Phone number to follow.

JAWS 2018 purchasers are being offered a deal on VFO's Pearl Camera. I'd be
interested in any thoughts on the value of this device. For example, if I'm
away from my PC, does taking a photo with the Pearl have any use? Also, how
does the Pearl/JFW compare to the KNFB Reader or any other accessible OCR
device? Thanks. If I'm not asking the right questions, please ask and answer
them for me!!
