Wayne,

I assume that new versions of JAWS keep up with developments on the Web that
don't help sell a software product. That said, JAWS 2018 doesn't work with
certain messages in Outlook 2010 and fails to keep its place on certain (though
not all) Webpages. I've brought these two problems to the attention of VFO by
email, but they insist I call to seek solutions, even though others have
reported similar experiences on this list. I don't want to spend the time nor
risk getting one of VFO's less skilled tech service people, all for what I
believe would be a fool's errand.

You seem to be asking if it's worth keeping up with the biennial SMA. If you
can afford it, the answer is surely yes. Whether for 2018 or some other future
version, VFO's pricing system makes SMA's cheaper than buying JAWS all over
again. Also, although I've never come across VFO claims of security, it could
be another reason to keep up to date, as it is for all software.

Adrian, I see that you are using Windows 7 64bit as I am. Is there any reason
to use JAWS 2018? I still use JAWS 17.

Wayne

Fernando,

Using your driver update example, I tried a couple of ideas on my system,
including seeing if the mouseover command would work. It didn't. However, the
words you indicate are missing from the control appear when I switch to the
JAWS cursor.

I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 machine and right now the last release of JAWS 18.
I haven't tested this with 2018.

Hi Mike,

I have access keys speaking set to All and Tutor Messages to Custom Messages
Only. However, I tried the Menus and Controls options but the issue is not
fixed.
It is expected that this setting doesn't fix this issue. This is because tutor
messages handles speaking of hints given by JAWS on how to operate the focused
control type with the keyboard; for example, when you are on a button and have
Tutor Messages to Menus and Controls, JAWS will say using the Tutor Message
voice: “To activate press space bar.”
These are JAWS-specific messages. Control descriptions are small help texts,
often just under the control name, which gives information on what a specific
control does and it's displayed on the screen. For example, when you are in the
Driver Update wizard for a device in Device Manager, the Search Driver Software
on your Computer button have a description telling “Search and install the
driver software manually,” and the button for check automatically tells
something longer about the searching on the computer and Windows Update unless
you disabled this in the device installation settings.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Fernando,

In Jaws quick settings, Options / Basics try these 2 settings if you haven't
already. I know I asked this earlier, but I don't know which settings you
tried. Using the settings below produced extra Jaws verbiage, but I just don't
recall exactly what the control description is supposed to say.

Tutor Messages Announce Menu and Control Help radio button checked
2 of 3

Access Key Speak all radio button checked
2 of 4

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for replying.
Yes, I checked both Quick Settings and the Settings Center for the active
verbosity level. In the active level, which is Beginner, I have checked the
Control Descriptions item, and changing between long or short messages produce
the same result on this problem.
Regarding Speech and Sounds Manager, I only changed the Classic scheme to make
different heading levels to play piano sounds. Even so, I tried reverting to
the original Classic scheme but, as I supposed, the problem is not fixed.
I also tried running JAWS in English to see if perhaps this is a specific issue
in the Spanish version (it wouldn't be the first time I must edit a translated
message missing a %1 or documentation which states things in an order different
to the actual one, for example), but this issue is also present in English.
I think this should be somewhat related to the FocusChangedEvent, but my
knowledge of event functions and scripting language in general is poor. As a
workaround I tried to add the SayControlDescription function in the
FocusChangedEvent, but it didn't worked at all.

Do you have some other ideas I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Fernando,

Without knowing what level of verboscity you run, have you looked to see what
your settings in the Jaws quick settings / Options / Basics are set at?
You're an advanced / very knowlebgeable Jaws computer operator, so I would
imagine you have, but just throwing the suggestion out there. Also has a
setting in Speech & Sound Schemes possibly changed?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS is not speaking control descriptions

Hi all,

Since many versions ago, JAWS is not reading the control descriptions even when
I have this item checked in the current verbosity level settings. If I want to
get this data, I manually have to locate the Touch Cursor with Advanced Object
Navigation on the desired control, press ALT+ENTER and find the value of the
HelpText property, which obviously is slow and often useless.

Does someone know how I could fix this to match the behavior of some old
versions like JAWS 9, in which this verbosity setting was always honored? I am
using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and JAWS 2018. It would be useful to
quickly know the information about commands in Office programs like Excel that
are complex and I don't use on a daily basis.

Thanks in advance,

Fernando Gregoire
