Mike, just a thought. Before going to the system tray, do you close the window displaying that drive's contents? Then does the confirmation show up in the system tray?
A related point: My tech consultant says that removing an item, such as an SD card, can be done safely so long as the window is closed. He'd say, then, that even if you aren't getting that reassuring confirmation, you'll be okay.
