I realize that some of you may not have the luxury of owning the Kurzweil
OCR program, but I have found that it does the best job when it comes to
reading PDF files. Even when it is a scanned image and Jaws does not
recognize text with the the document, Kurzweil will convert that image to
text and does a great job of reading it. Just this week I received a PDF
attachment and when I tried to open it with Adobe and read it with Jaws, I
received the message that it was an empty document. I simply did a control
p to print and chose the Kesi Virtual printer. The document opened and I
was able to read it. I am not certain about this, but I would assume that
Openbook has the same capability.

I would prefer being able to read PDF files straight from PDF files
reliably
as well. But many times I encounter a badly structured file which has
problems reading in Acrobat Reader, I select Save as Text in the file
menu.
Then I can open the converted file in any text editor. This is not
perfect
either. But I find that reading does not skip around this way and I have
never learned the secret to using the find in Acrobat Reader. I used
this
method this morning to read a DirecTV User Manual for a few different
receivers to search for specific details regarding enabling Described
Video.

It largely depends on what sort of .pdf you are reading, whether JAWS
can
deal with it comfortably or not. You can modify some settings in the
Reading panel, i.e., reducing the number of pages visible from 10 to 1,
and
if your pdf documents are usually large changing what Adobe Reader
thinks
of
as a large document from 50 pages to, say, 10, as well as modifying
accessibility settings (if links are not visible, etc.) So depends on
the
type of pdf document oand whether it was tagged or not. If it wasn't,
Adobe
Reader will attempt to tag it and it may have problems doing so. .
JAWS
is
not the main problem here.
