I know that the Canadian government has banned the sale of DirecTV. I hear
that many Canadians buy used equipment and hack the service. Apparently,
DirecTV turns a blind eye to this piracy. Here in the States, they would
aggressively shut them down.

I have had DirecTV since 1995. This spring I had pushed them so long about
Described Video Service that they provided me a free upgrade to their
Internet connected DVR. It has a lot of great features and much of its
operation is completely accessible! Scheduling recordings or On Demand
downloads from the Internet is fantastic! Of course, remote functions like
pausing, fast forward over commercials, and switching to DVS are completely
accessible as well. Unfortunately, there are a few key areas that are not!
The biggest failure is selecting a recorded show to watch from "My
Playlist". Anything beyond watching the last recorded show can be
difficult. The same good / bad story with Described Video Service (DVS)!
The FCC started a working group this summer to resolve technical issues with
DVS after the conversion to digital. DirecTV has a representative at these
meetings, Robert Gabrielli. These meetings are open on the web to the
public. DirecTV seems to be holding back and I don't buy their technical
arguments for not providing transmission of all shows which have DVS
available! Let DirecTV and your cable providers that you are interested.
I have some information on these topics on a crude website. I have not
updated it lately or my JAWS Scripts associated with DirecTV. The Word
document I wrote to describe the functions and placement of the buttons
should be very helpful! I will try to update these pages in the next few
days.

Well, I have the direct tv dvr and dvr remote and it is on of the green
buttons just bellow the arrow buttons with the round thing in the middle. I
believe when you go down from that round part that there is a like kind of
semi-circle thing that has like four or five buttons and it is the third
button from the left. I believe.
And if there is not any description, it will make a sound and if there is
other description like spanish or another language it will play in that
language. You just keep hitting that button to scroll through.
I don't know why my locals aren't described. I contacted dvs and they said
it has to do with how the direct tv locals are going through the sattilite
or something. tnt has law and order (not svu or anything just law and
order) described and tcm has a lot of movies discribed.
Also you can set your dvr to record from a computer and press the buttons at
te bottom of the round arrow thing that is like rectangle and then the slect
button in the middle of the arrows and then play or use the arrows to
scrooll through the stuf on er dvr. Then to del you go back one arrow, the
key on the left, and press the little button underneath the arrow kind of on
the right side. This stuff is kinda hard to explain. It helps if you can
have a sighted person show you the buttons onee, and then you can learn
them.

In My apartment we are allowed to have directv and such as long as we
purchase renter's.
The direct tv remote also has a language btn on it that will turn on sap
when it's available so you can get audio described programs. Except for
some
reason it doesn't work on my locals only on the nonlocals like tnt 245 tcm
256 etc.

Some of us live in apartment buildings where Satel lite TV is not
permitted.
I would love to have a satel lite tv receiver but I would be kicked out
of
this building where I live.
We are not aloud to have anything attached to the building at all.

Hello folks,
Why do you not switch to satelite broadcast rather than cable with a
digital tv card and a dish on the roof? I currently use digital tv card
and receive the broadcasts from three sats through a very accessible
software with Jaws for windows. I think of preparing a podcast regarding
this topic actually.

Yes, I finally got the chance too read it. I have been trying for
years, fighting with our cable company to provide us with the ability
to
be able too access those dammed on screen menus, but have had no
success. I hope that this technology will finally open a door that has
been closed too us. If their's a way too do it, I think that we should
all send them an email thanking them for trying to develop this
project, and send them stories of our frustration in trying too get the
cable industry in particular, too listen too our concerns especially
when you consider the fact that we who are blind, and listen too movies
and other events, pay a monthly subscription service and don't have the
same rightsthat people with vision have.

Hi Albert, Were you able to read this fantastic article? I sure hope
we'll be able to get it and that it will work with JAWS!
The article says that RNIB will be carrying Ocean Blue's Software. I
went to RNIB's web page and I couldn't find how to request more info
on
this product. If anyone can figure that out, would you let us know?
If this is not yet proper for this list, you can write me offline at:

Many thanks for sharing this exciting information! Vicky
