Folks, the only way to successfully uninstall avast is by using their
removal tool. You will be told there was an error when uninstalling avast
when You attempt to do so threw the control panel. And it will still be
listed in Your list of programs as well as in the system tray. Also if You
attempt to delete the alwil Software folder it will tell You that access was
denied. You will have no choice but to use their removal tool. Which You can
find from their website at avast.com. Once again You must run this removal
tool in safe mode which renders jaws useless. So, You, will need sighted
assistance to complete this process. I have attempted to do all the steps
which Brian listed and was successful at doing them all. However avast still
remains when You attempt to uninstall it the normal way that You would
uninstall a program.

First off, thanks for the information on avast's version 5 accessibility.
Second, You're correct in that You will have to use the uninstall tool in
safe mood which makes jaws unusable. You will need sighted assistance to
complete this project.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] New Avast Free 5.0 not accessible with Jaws.
Hi list. I tried the new Avast 5.0 free version out on my PC this
morning,
found it inaccessible with Jaws because alwil Software has changed the
interface into a graphical interface, so I restored my computer using my
backup I created with Image for Windowswhich already had Avast 4 Home
Edition. Now, what I would like to do is uninstall Avast 4 Home Edition
and
use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. I have tried to uninstall
Avast
in the past, but it didn't completely uninstall and was still in the
system
tray when I rebooted. Right now I'm still using Avast 4 Home Edition and
Windows XP Professional SP3. I'm using Jaws 9.0, the latest build. I
have
downloaded alwil Software's uninstall utility, but I'm told I will need
to
use it in Safe Mode. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Stanley
