Also, if there is a unique sign or character demarcating the end of the chapter or the beginning of the next one, by pressing F8 and then pressing the keystroke for that sign, from your cursor position down to that point is selected. You may need to do a bit of switching with the F8 key (and shift+F8 to reduce, if you've selected to much) to see if it works.

I know how all the basic select commands work. I am asking for something different, which I think has been provided. I want to know quite specifically how to highlight a PORTION OF TEXT in a document that is not a line, word, or paragraph so that cannot; select with the normal commands. (Let's assume the section is in the middle of the document, so select-to-end and select-to-beginning are not efficient ways of ding this.) Does that make things clearer?

Can you use the control a to select all?

This actually was not what I am asking. Let us say I need to
copy a chapter from a textbook that is several pages long. How
can I do this, other than going paragraph by paragraph and
appending? I know sighted people can do this, and I can do it
quite easily with a notetaker.

Hi Kelby,

Try the information below to see if this will do what you are
wanting to
accomplish.

The F8 key in Word is a Toggle. You press the F8 key a different
number of
times to select different amounts of text.
Pressing the F8 key 1 time turns extended selection mode on. In
this mode
you can arrow up or down to select text line by line.
Pressing the F8 key 2 times will copy the highlighted word.
Pressing the F8 key 3 times will copy the sentence the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 4 times will copy the paragraph the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 5 times will copy the document.

Hope this has helped. Take care.
Mike

Brief question from a first-timer. Is there a way to block
text--as in multiple paragraphs--for selection in a document
with
JAWS? Like highlighting a certain section of thedocument that
is
not just a line, word or paragraph for copying and/or cutting?
